Brief History

Markle is situated on what was once known as the Richardville and Wildcat reserves, named after an Indian whose name meant “Wildcat”. On Nov. 6, 1838, President Tyler and the Indian brave Pish-e-Wah (Wildcat) both signed the land agreement. The fact all Wildcat did was make an ”X” on the land agreement shouldn't bother the current Markle residents. It didn't bother President Tyler. The document declared.

“Granted to Pish-e-Wah, Miami Indian brave, 675 and 63 hundredths acres of land now including one mile frontage on the Wabash River. Now know ye that this is therefore granted by the United States of America unto the said Pish-e-Wah and to the heirs of the same, the tract of land above described.” So it must have been decided that the name “Wildcat Festival” sounded better than the ”Pish-e-Wah Festival.”
